Why Are Businesses Moving Back to the City?

On 03, Aug, 2017

Recent years have seen a strong trend of businesses moving back to cities. In Alabama, and across the nation, it seems that the number of companies moving downtown is increasing by the day. What used to be seen as run-down and hopeless has become cool and full of potential. While we certainly support this movement, it does bring up the question of why is this suddenly the popular decision. Let’s discuss a few primary motives below.

Workers

Everyone knows the question “What came first, the chicken or the egg?” – and a similar question can be asked about the surging downtown business scene. Instead of chickens and eggs, however, we have to wonder whether the millennials or increased business came first. Regardless of the answer, there is no denying that businesses benefit from having a young, energetic, and diverse crowd within a couple miles of the workplace. Public transportation, Uber, and an increased biking presence make it even easier for those living in the city to get to their urban jobs.

Environment

Cities have always had a certain visual appeal, and the increasing number of new developments is only adding to the beauty. Murals, parks, renovations, and so much more are providing new reasons to love our cities. Not to mention the restaurants, concerts, breweries, sporting events, and everything else that comes with living in a heavily populated environment. City offices have also taken steps to increase their personal aesthetic. With a focus on creativity and positivity, workplaces have been able to truly express themselves in a way they couldn’t before.

Convenience

An increase in businesses means that everything a company needs is practically within arm’s reach. Most companies will find that their bank, attorney, shipping store, airport, and business partners will be close by. Although technology has made it much easier to converse from long distances, there is still something to be said for being close to everything needed for success.
